Harvest for the Departed

Friends and fellow farmers gathered in Lowell, Indiana to bring in the crop of Michael Jones who was tragically killed in August when a semitrailer crashed into a farm vehicle he was driving on U.S. 41. Documenting this today reinforced my belief that farmers are the kindest folk out there. It was an interesting experience to share with this tight-knit community. Today demonstrates why i love being a photojournalist. I can move in and out of people's lives if only for a few hours and tell their stories.

Lori Jones of Lowell shares a moment with John Shelhart of Lowell as he worked a field with his combine just south-east of the Buckley Homestead in Lowell Thursday morning as farmers and friends of Mike Jones harvested his fields after his untimely death on August 27, 2007.

Jeff Bydalek of Lowell directs harvested corn into his truck in a field south-east of the Buckley Homestead Thursday morning in Lowell. Bydalek then drove the corn from the field of the Jones family to the Lake County Co-op.

While his corn is off-loaded at the Lake County Co-op, Ken Jones, father of Mike Jones, right, talks with Co-op worker Cecil Mercer Thursday in Lowell.

Lori Jones, right, and her son Jake, 16, talk in the Lake County Co-op as trucks continue to dump the harvest of the Jones' fields into the afternoon Thursday in Lowell.

Bob Jensen of Lowell runs his combine through a field of Mike Jones Thursday morning just south-east of the Buckley Homestead. Jensen and Jones have been friends since going to school together over 30 years ago.

One of the three combines that worked the field south-east of the Buckley Homestead starts to off-load corn into a grain cart Thursday morning in Lowell. At least a couple dozen farmers and friends donated their time and equipment to harvest the Jones family fields Thursday.

Ken Jones, father of Mike Jones, left, shares a story about buying Mike a calf for getting a "B" in a class with Mike Kralek of Lowell and Randy Wietbrock of Lowell, not pictured, while waiting in line to off-load the harvested corn at the Lake County Co-op Thursday in Lowell.

Carol Allen of the Lake County Co-op whips up a Sloppy Joe sandwich "to-go" for a volunteer Thursday afternoon in Lowell. In addition to the Sloppy Joes, Sausage and Sour Kraut, cookies and cake were on the menu for the volunteers.
