long hard road out of hell

Saturday's in the newspaper industry are hit-or-miss a lot of the time. Certain Saturdays are pretty open, maybe one to two assignments per photographer. Today was a big day. By the end I worked a total of 11 hours(thank god for OT) and shot on six different assignments. These are the pictures from five of the six from today....one assignment was for advance....These are not all winners...but on a six assignment day you need to pick your battles and budget your time on assignments.

Assignment One: National AIDS day in Gary, Ind. Nothing big is happening until noon, but get pictures of them setting up.

Social Work Masters students at Indiana University Northwest Amber Bodak, right, releases a balloon to the ceiling after tying a string to it while G. Kelly Harrison, center, hands a red balloon to Twan Stokes as they prepare for the balloon release as part of the observation of World AIDS Day at the Calvary Institutional Missionary Baptist Church Saturday in Gary.

Assignment Two: Christmas Parade in downtown Hobart, Ind. - need multiple photos - Parade will be short - don't blink.

Lois Osbourn of Miller takes a break form her lunch to peak out the front window of Abbott’s Restaurant as the three wise men ride down Main Street in the Christmas parade in downtown Hobart Saturday. The Christmas parade ran down Main Street from Fourth Street to St. Bridget Hall.

Santa Claus hangs onto the back of a Hobart fire truck as a walking nativity scene follows him down Main Street in the Christmas parade in downtown Hobart Saturday.

Assignment Three: In-between assignments, pick up lunch and be on the lookout for wintery features. The snow is coming.

The remains of fall and the fresh snowfall bury the remaining green grass at Fred Rose park Saturday afternoon in Hobart.

Assignment Four: Assignment popped up last night after i went home - Local plumber will be installing a bathroom as part of a "flip the house" reality show in Hobart, Ind. Cameraman doesn't want to be identifiable in the picture. Tight on time between this assignment and the next one.

Ben Gardner of Plumbing Solutions in Valparaiso is filmed by “Flip this House” while working on a bathroom sink in a Hobart home that is being renovated Saturday afternoon in Hobart.

Assignment Five: Girls Basketball Valparaiso University vs Ball State in Valparaiso, Ind. - send two pictures - We have portable lights to shoot with so the images come out fairly clean. The problem is that you can only shoot about one image to two images a second when the batteries are full.

Valparaiso University junior Agnieszka Kulaga makes an aerobatic lay-up between Ball State defenders during the first half Saturday afternoon at the Athletic Recreation Center at Valparaiso University. Kulaga led all scorers with 18 points as Valparaiso defeated Ball State 64-55.

Valparaiso University junior Agnieszka Kulaga (11) reacts with Whitney Farris (25) after making a lay-up while being fouled by a ball state defender Saturday afternoon at the Athletic Recreation Center at Valparaiso University.

Eat dinner; edit images; transmit images; drive from Valpo to Merrillville in the ice storm

Assignment Three (redux): "Scott we need weather art really bad. Can you shoot something on the way home?" I drive to my exit where a 50-mile back-up starts. I ditch my car at the top of the off-ramp and walk into the middle of stopped traffic on I-65 and make pictures.

Traffic is at a near stand-still southbound on I-65 just beyond Route 231 as a single car makes its way in the northbound lanes in Crown Point Saturday night. The backup began about a mile and a half before the exit for Route 231 and continued to around Wolcott.

Started at 9:30 a.m. - ended at 8:30 p.m.
Today was a good day.
